The human body: external parts and main organs

  1. Your body has three parts that can be seen on the outside: the head, the trunk and the limbs.

  2. On the head are the face, with the eyes, the nose, the mouth and the ears. The trunk is the middle part: the chest and the tummy. The limbs are the two arms and the two legs. The arms end in the hands. The legs end in the feet.

  3. Inside the body there are organs. An organ is a part on the inside that does a job. You cannot see them from the outside, but they are there. These four are very important.

  4. The brain is inside the head. With it we think, remember and order the body to move.

    The heart is in the chest, in the middle and a little to the left. It beats without stopping and pushes the blood all around the body. It is about the size of your fist.

    There are two lungs, one on each side of the heart. They fill with air when you breathe. That is why the chest swells a little.

  5. The stomach is inside the tummy, in the upper part. It receives the food we swallow and starts to break it down. After that, the food goes on its way. It does not stay there for ever.

Gus sits quietly and puts his hand on the middle of his chest. He feels soft, steady little thumps. Which organ is beating?

  1. The thumps come from inside the chest.
  2. The organ that beats and pushes the blood is the heart.
  3. It is in the middle of the chest, a little to the left.

Julie eats a piece of Ellie’s bread. Where does the bread go after it is swallowed?

  1. The bread goes down inside the body to the tummy.
  2. The organ that receives it is the stomach.
  3. There it is broken down little by little and then goes on its way.

The bread reaches the stomach and then goes on its way.

¡Ojo! Many children think the food stays in the stomach for ever.

Tony runs to the canal and takes a deep breath. His chest swells. Which organs fill with air?

  2. An organ on each side of the heart fills with air.
  3. They are the lungs: there are two.

Both lungs fill.
