After sein, no ending (Der Hund ist groß). Before a noun, with an ending: der große Hund (-e), ein großer Hund (-er), eine große Katze, ein großes Haus (-es).

Rule and examples

No ending: after sein

When the adjective comes after sein, werden or bleiben, it has no ending: Der Hund ist groß. Die Katze wird müde. Das Wasser bleibt kalt. The adjective always stays the same, whether masculine, feminine or neuter.

Example Der Hund ist groß. · Die Katze ist klein. · Das Buch ist neu.

After der, die, das: -e

When the adjective comes before the noun, it takes an ending. After the definite article in the nominative it is always -e: der große Hund, die kleine Katze, das neue Buch. In the plural -en: die großen Hunde, die kleinen Katzen.

After ein, eine, ein: -er, -e, -es

After ein, eine, ein the adjective shows the gender: masculine -er, feminine -e, neuter -es: ein großer Hund, eine kleine Katze, ein neues Buch. In the masculine accusative -en: Ich sehe einen großen Hund. In the dative and in the plural, after the article, always -en: mit dem kleinen Hund, die kleinen Hunde.
