Sentences
Negation: nicht and kein
Verneinung: nicht und kein
kein negates a noun without an article or with ein/eine: Ich habe keinen Hund. nicht negates verbs, adjectives and nouns with a definite article: Ich schlafe nicht.
Rule and examples
Kein instead of ein
Kein negates a noun that has ein/eine or no article at all: Ich habe einen Hund. → Ich habe keinen Hund. Ich habe Zeit. → Ich habe keine Zeit. Kein is declined like ein: kein, keine, kein; masculine accusative keinen; plural keine.
Example Ich habe keinen Hund. · Ich habe keine Zeit.
Nicht negates everything else
Nicht negates the verb, an adjective, an adverb, a place phrase and nouns with a definite article or possessive: Ich schlafe nicht. Das Wasser ist nicht kalt. Ich wohne nicht in Berlin. Ich sehe den Hund nicht. Ich kenne dein Buch nicht.
Example Ich schlafe nicht. · Das Wasser ist nicht kalt.
Where does nicht go?
When the whole sentence is negated, nicht goes at the end: Ich sehe den Hund nicht. Before an adjective, an adverb or a preposition, nicht goes in front: nicht kalt, nicht in Berlin, nicht ins Kino. With separable verbs, nicht goes before the prefix: Das Paket kommt nicht an. Other negatives: nie (never), nichts, niemand.
Example Ich sehe den Hund nicht. · Wir gehen nicht ins Kino.
