Personal pronouns: er, ihn, ihm

Personalpronomen: er, ihn, ihm

Nominative: ich, du, er, sie, es, wir, ihr, sie. Accusative: mich, dich, ihn, sie, es, uns, euch, sie. Dative: mir, dir, ihm, ihr, ihm, uns, euch, ihnen.

Rule and examples

Er, sie, es

The pronoun follows the gender of the noun, even for things: der Hund → er, der Tisch → er, die Katze → sie, die Tasche → sie, das Buch → es, das Auto → es. In the plural it is always sie: die Kinder → sie. All the nominative forms: ich, du, er/sie/es, wir, ihr, sie. Polite, to a person you address formally: Sie.

Example Der Hund schläft. → Er schläft. · Die Katze schläft. → Sie schläft.

Accusative: mich, dich, ihn …

In the accusative: ich → mich, du → dich, er → ihn, sie → sie, es → es, wir → uns, ihr → euch, sie → sie. Of er, sie, es only er changes (→ ihn): Ich sehe den Hund. → Ich sehe ihn. But: Ich sehe die Katze. → Ich sehe sie. Ich sehe das Buch. → Ich sehe es.

Example Ich sehe den Hund. → Ich sehe ihn. · Paul kennt mich.

Dative: mir, dir, ihm …

In the dative: ich → mir, du → dir, er → ihm, sie → ihr, es → ihm, wir → uns, ihr → euch, sie → ihnen. Ich helfe dem Kind. → Ich helfe ihm. Ich danke der Lehrerin. → Ich danke ihr. The dative also follows mit, bei, von, zu, nach, aus: mit mir, bei ihr, von ihnen.

Example Ich helfe dem Bäcker. → Ich helfe ihm. · Paul hilft mir.
