a / à, et / est, ou / où

A = avait; à = preposition. Et = et puis; est = était. Ou = ou bien; où = place.

Rule and examples

a or à?

A (no accent) is the verb avoir: you can replace it with avait. Il a faim → il avait faim. À (with an accent) is a preposition: you cannot replace it with avait. Il va à l’école.

Example Il a faim. · Il va à l’école.

et or est?

Et links two words or two sentences: you can replace it with et puis. Léa et Paul jouent. Est is the verb être: you can replace it with était. Le chat est noir → le chat était noir.

Example Léa et Paul jouent. · Le chat est noir.

ou or où?

Ou (no accent) offers a choice: you can replace it with ou bien. Du thé ou du café? Où (with an accent) shows a place or asks about a place: où habites-tu? la ville où j’habite.

Example Du thé ou du café ? · Où habites-tu ?
