Rule and examples

How to form the imparfait

Être is different

Être has its own stem: ét-. Avoir: j’avais. Aller: j’allais. Voir: nous voyions, vous voyiez (with y and then i).

Example j’étais · il était · nous étions

When to use it?

The imparfait says what used to happen again and again (chaque été, le dimanche, autrefois), what lasted or what we described in the past: il y avait un phare. A long action is interrupted by another: je lisais quand le téléphone a sonné.
