Rule and examples
Avoir + past participle
To talk about the past we put avoir in the present and the past participle of the verb: j’ai mangé · tu as mangé · il a mangé · nous avons mangé · vous avez mangé · ils ont mangé. The participle does not change with avoir (in these sentences).
Example Hier, nous avons mangé une pizza.
The past participle
Verbs in -er: -é (manger → mangé). Verbs in -ir (finir): -i (fini). Verbs in -re: -u (vendre → vendu). Many are irregular: faire → fait, prendre → pris, mettre → mis, voir → vu, avoir → eu, dire → dit, lire → lu, boire → bu, pouvoir → pu, vouloir → voulu.
Example mangé · fini · vendu · fait · pris · vu
The negation: n’ai pas mangé
Ne … pas goes around the auxiliary: je n’ai pas mangé · tu n’as pas mangé · nous n’avons pas mangé. Ne becomes n’ before a vowel. Pas comes before the participle, never after it.
Example Je n’ai pas mangé. · Nous n’avons pas fini.
