Replacing a word: le, la, les, lui, leur, y, en

Remplacer un mot : le, la, les, lui, leur, y, en

Le, la, l’, les replace a direct object; lui, leur replace “à + person”. They go before the verb.

Rule and examples

Le, la, l’, les

To avoid repeating a noun that answers “who?” or “what?”: le (masculine), la (feminine), l’ (before a vowel), les (plural). Je vois Paul → je le vois · je regarde Léa → je la regarde · il prend les clés → il les prend. They go before the verb.

Example Je le vois. · Il les prend.

Lui, leur

To replace “à + a person”: lui (one person, boy or girl), leur (several people). Je parle à Marie → je lui parle · je téléphone à mes amis → je leur téléphone. Lui and leur do not change for the feminine.

Example Je lui parle. · Je leur téléphone.

Where does the pronoun go? Y and en

With the near future, the pronoun goes before the infinitive: je vais la manger. In the passé composé, it goes before the auxiliary: je l’ai vu. In the negative, ne … pas goes around the pronoun and the verb: je ne le vois pas. Y replaces a place: j’y vais (= je vais à Paris). En replaces a quantity: j’en ai trois (= j’ai trois frères).

Example Je vais la manger. · Je l’ai vu. · J’y vais.
