Sentences

Cities and countries: a Roma, in Italia

Città e paesi: a Roma, in Italia

A + city (a Roma). In + country or region (in Italia, in Sicilia). Da + city (da Parigi) and dalla/dal/dall’ + country. Plural countries: negli Stati Uniti, nei Paesi Bassi.

Rule and examples

A for cities, in for countries

To say where we live or where we go, with a city we use “a” (abito a Roma, vado a Parigi), with a country or a region we use “in” (abito in Italia, vado in Francia, sono in Toscana). With no article: we do not say “nella Francia”.

Example a Roma · a Parigi · in Italia · in Francia · in Toscana

Da dove vieni?

For origin we use “da”. With a city: vengo da Parigi. With a country “da” joins the article: vengo dall’Italia, dalla Francia, dalla Spagna, dal Portogallo, dal Giappone, dagli Stati Uniti. We do not say “da Francia”.

Example vengo da Parigi · vengo dalla Francia · vengo dall’Italia

Plural countries, islands and regions

Plural countries or countries with an article use “in” + article: negli Stati Uniti, nel Regno Unito, nei Paesi Bassi, nelle Filippine. Regions and large islands take “in”: in Sicilia, in Toscana. Small islands take “a”: a Capri. With singular countries there is no article after “in”, even if the name has one (il Giappone, il Portogallo): in Giappone, in Portogallo.

Example negli Stati Uniti · nel Regno Unito · in Sicilia · a Capri · in Giappone
