Spelling

ß or ss?

ß oder ss?

ß comes after a long vowel and after a diphthong (Straße, groß, heiß); ss after a short vowel (Wasser, Fluss, muss). In Switzerland ss is always used.

Rule and examples

Long vowel: ß

If the vowel is long or a diphthong (ei, au, eu, äu), you write ß: die Straße, der Fuß, groß, der Spaß, heiß, weiß, draußen, grüßen, beißen. Stretching the sound helps: Fuß – Fuuß, Straße – Straaße.

Short vowel: ss

Just s, and Switzerland

Sometimes a single s stays when the s sounds voiced in related words: das Haus – die Häuser, das Glas – die Gläser, der Bus, das Eis, der Reis, die Maus – die Mäuse. In Switzerland ss is always written instead of ß (Strasse). In this exercise the spelling of Germany and Austria applies. Also in capitals: STRASSE.

Example das Haus – die Häuser · das Glas · der Bus
