Der Plural der Nomen

In the plural the article is always “die”. Endings: -e, -n/-en, -er, -s or none; often with an umlaut (ä, ö, ü).

Rule and examples

Five plural forms

There are five types: -e (Hund → Hunde), -n or -en (Katze → Katzen, Tür → Türen), -er (Kind → Kinder), -s (Auto → Autos) and no ending (Lehrer → Lehrer). An umlaut is often added: Baum → Bäume, Buch → Bücher, Vogel → Vögel. We learn the plural together with the noun.

Always “die” in the plural

The plural article is the same for all three genders: der Hund → die Hunde, die Katze → die Katzen, das Kind → die Kinder. A common mistake is to keep the old article (“der Hunde”, “das Kinder”).

Example der Tisch → die Tische · das Heft → die Hefte

Rules of thumb

Most feminine nouns ending in -e form the plural with -n: Blume → Blumen. Feminine nouns ending in -in double the n: Lehrerin → Lehrerinnen. Nouns ending in -er, -el, -en and -chen mostly stay the same: Lehrer, Löffel, Kuchen, Mädchen. Words from other languages and words ending in -o, -a, -y often take -s: Auto, Foto, Oma, Handy.
