The prefix goes to the end of the sentence: aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. With a modal verb and in a subordinate clause the verb stays together: Ich will früh aufstehen.

The prefix goes to the end
In separable verbs the conjugated verb is in position 2 and the prefix goes to the end of the sentence: aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. anrufen → Ich rufe Oma an. einkaufen → Wir kaufen im Supermarkt ein. Common prefixes: auf-, an-, aus-, ein-, mit-, zu-, ab-, weg-, zurück-, fern-.
Example Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. · Wir kaufen ein.
Staying together: modal verb and subordinate clause
With a modal verb the separable verb goes to the end in the infinitive and is written as one word, without “zu”: Ich muss früh aufstehen. In a subordinate clause too the verb stays whole and goes to the end: Ich bin müde, weil ich früh aufstehe.
Example Ich muss früh aufstehen. · …, weil ich früh aufstehe.
Not separable: be-, ver-, er-, ent-
Verbs with the prefixes be-, ver-, er-, ent-, ge-, zer- are not separable: besuchen → Ich besuche Oma. verstehen → Ich verstehe dich. erklären → Er erklärt die Aufgabe. Here the verb always stays together.
Example Ich besuche Oma. · Ich verstehe dich.
