The nine prepositions
Nine prepositions can take the dative or the accusative: an · auf · hinter · in · neben · über · unter · vor · zwischen. The verb decides: for a place (where?) it is the dative, for a direction (where to?) the accusative.
Example an · auf · hinter · in · neben · über · unter · vor · zwischen
Where? Dative – Where to? Accusative
Where? (place, no change): Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. Der Hund sitzt hinter der Tür. Where to? (direction, movement to a goal): Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. Der Hund läuft hinter die Tür. Verb pairs: liegen – legen · stehen – stellen · sitzen – setzen · hängen (where?) – hängen (where to?).
Example Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. · Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch.
Im, am, ins, ans
Preposition and article often merge: in dem → im · an dem → am (where?) · in das → ins · an das → ans · auf das → aufs (where to?). Der Bäcker ist im Laden. Gus geht ins Haus. Die Kinder sitzen am Tisch. Mia geht ans Fenster.
Example im Laden · am Tisch · ins Haus · ans Fenster
