Before a vowel: l’

Before a vowel or a silent h, le and la become l’: l’école, l’ami, l’histoire. Un and une do not change: un ami, une amie.

The aspirated h

Before an aspirated h there is no elision: le héros, le hibou, la honte. You cannot hear it, but it acts like a consonant. Learn these words one by one.
