Le pluriel des noms

Usually + s. Nouns in -eau and -eu take x; -al becomes -aux; s, x, z do not change.

Rule and examples

Usually: + s

To make the plural we add s: un chat → des chats. You cannot hear the s, but you write it. When we speak, the article (les, des) and the verb show the plural.

Example un chat → des chats · une pomme → des pommes

-eau, -eu: x · -al: -aux

Nouns in -eau and -eu take an x: un gâteau → des gâteaux, un jeu → des jeux. Nouns in -al become -aux: un cheval → des chevaux, un journal → des journaux. Exceptions: un pneu → des pneus, un bal → des bals, un festival → des festivals.

Example un bateau → des bateaux · un cheval → des chevaux

No change: s, x, z

A noun that already ends in s, x or z stays the same: un colis → des colis, une souris → des souris, un prix → des prix, un nez → des nez.

Example un colis → des colis · un nez → des nez

Seven nouns in -ou take x

Bijou, caillou, chou, genou, hibou, joujou and pou take an x: des bijoux, des cailloux… Other nouns in -ou take an s: un trou → des trous, un clou → des clous. Also: un œil → des yeux, un travail → des travaux.

Example un bijou → des bijoux · un trou → des trous
