Verbs
The conditional: politeness and dreams
Le conditionnel : politesse et rêves
Infinitive + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient: je voudrais, tu pourrais. After si + imparfait: si j’avais un dragon, je volerais.
Rule and examples
Asking politely
To be polite, we put vouloir, pouvoir or aimer in the conditional: je voudrais un verre d’eau (not “je veux”), tu pourrais m’aider ?, j’aimerais un gâteau.
Example Je voudrais un verre d’eau, s’il vous plaît.
How to form it
Like the simple future (infinitive, or irregular stem) but with the endings of the imparfait: je parlerais · tu parlerais · il parlerait · nous parlerions · vous parleriez · ils parleraient. Future: j’aimerai; conditional: j’aimerais (with an s).
Example je mangerais · il irait · nous serions
Si + imparfait → conditional
To dream or imagine we say: si + imparfait, conditional. Si j’avais un dragon, je volerais partout. After “si”, never the conditional.
Example Si j’avais un dragon, je volerais partout.
