Sentences

The negation: ne … pas

La négation : ne … pas

Ne … pas goes around the verb: je ne parle pas. Before a vowel: n’. After the negation: pas de / d’.

Rule and examples

Ne … pas around the verb

To say no, we put ne before the verb and pas after it: je ne parle pas · tu ne chantes pas · nous ne mangeons pas. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’: je n’aime pas · elle n’ouvre pas. In writing, we never forget the ne.

Example Je ne parle pas. · Elle n’aime pas le thé.

Pas de, pas d’

After a negation, un, une, du, de la, des become de (or d’ before a vowel): j’ai un chien → je n’ai pas de chien; elle mange du pain → elle ne mange pas de pain; nous avons des oranges → nous n’avons pas d’oranges. But after être we keep the article: ce n’est pas un chien. We also keep un, une, des when we count or contrast: je n’ai pas un chien, j’en ai trois.

Example Je n’ai pas de chien. · Ce n’est pas un chien.

Jamais, rien, plus, personne

Ne … pas can change: ne … jamais (never), ne … rien (nothing), ne … plus (no more), ne … personne (nobody). The ne stays before the verb: je ne vois rien · il n’y a plus de pain · elle ne voit personne. In speech people often say “je vois rien”, but in writing the ne is compulsory.

Example Je ne vois rien. · Il n’y a plus de pain.
