Mon, ma, mes… (possessives)

Mon, ma, mes… (les possessifs)

The possessive agrees with the thing owned: mon vélo, ma maison, mes livres. Leur / leurs: several owners.

Rule and examples

One owner

Me: mon (masculine), ma (feminine), mes (plural). You: ton, ta, tes. He or she: son, sa, ses. The possessive agrees with the thing owned, not with the owner: Léa prend son sac, Paul prend sa trousse.

Example mon vélo · ma maison · mes livres · son sac · sa trousse

Several owners

We: notre, nos. You (plural or polite): votre, vos. They: leur (one thing), leurs (several things). The s of leurs shows there are several things.

Example notre école · nos amis · leur chien · leurs chiens

Mon, ton, son before a vowel

Before a feminine noun that starts with a vowel or a silent h we say mon, ton, son (not ma, ta, sa): mon amie, ton école, son histoire.

Example mon amie · ton école · son idée
