The adjective: feminine and plural

L’adjectif : féminin et pluriel

The adjective agrees with the noun: petit → petite → petits → petites. Bel, nouvel, vieil before a vowel.

Rule and examples

The adjective agrees

The adjective takes the gender and the number of the noun. Feminine: we often add e (petit → petite). Plural: we often add s (petits, petites). If the adjective already ends in e, it does not change in the feminine (rouge, rouge).

Example un petit chat · une petite souris · des chats noirs

Special feminines

Some adjectives change more: heureux → heureuse, blanc → blanche, long → longue, gentil → gentille, bon → bonne, gros → grosse, doux → douce, cher → chère, sportif → sportive, beau → belle, frais → fraîche. In the masculine plural, those in -x do not change: des garçons heureux.

Example une fille heureuse · une porte blanche · une salade fraîche

Bel, nouvel, vieil

Before a masculine noun that starts with a vowel or a silent h, beau, nouveau and vieux become bel, nouvel and vieil: un bel arbre, un nouvel ami, un vieil hôtel. Before a consonant: un beau chat, un nouveau vélo, un vieux sac.

Example un bel arbre · un nouvel ami · un vieil hôtel
