Present tense: -ir, -re and partir

Présent : -ir, -re et partir

Finir: -is, -is, -it, -issons, -issez, -issent. Vendre: -s, -s, (nothing), -ons, -ez, -ent. Partir: pars, pars, part, partons…

Rule and examples

Finir (2nd group)

Verbs like finir, choisir, grandir, réussir have -iss- in the plural: je finis · tu finis · il finit · nous finissons · vous finissez · ils finissent.

Example je finis · il finit · nous finissons · ils finissent

Vendre (verbs in -re)

Vendre, attendre, répondre, entendre, perdre, rendre: je vends · tu vends · il vend · nous vendons · vous vendez · ils vendent. With “il” we add nothing: il vend (not “il vends”).

Example je vends · il vend · nous vendons · ils vendent

Partir, sortir, dormir, servir

These verbs lose the last consonant of the stem in the singular: je pars · tu pars · il part · nous partons · vous partez · ils partent. No -iss- here: we never say “nous partissons”. Ouvrir and offrir are conjugated like verbs in -er: j’ouvre · tu ouvres · il ouvre · nous ouvrons.
