Verbs

Present tense: verbs in -er

Présent : les verbes en -er

Remove -er and add: -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent (je parle, tu parles, nous parlons).

Rule and examples

The endings

Almost all verbs in -er are conjugated the same way: remove -er (parler → parl-) and add -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent. Je parle · tu parles · il parle · nous parlons · vous parlez · ils parlent.

Example je parle · tu parles · nous parlons · ils parlent

It sounds the same, it is written differently

Parle, parles and parlent sound the same. To write the right ending, look for the subject: je / il → -e, tu → -es, ils → -ent. Never say “je parler”: the verb must be conjugated.

Example Elle parle. · Tu parles. · Elles parlent.

A few small changes

Manger → nous mangeons (we keep the e for the sound [ʒ]). Commencer → nous commençons (ç for the sound [s]). Acheter → j’achète. Appeler → j’appelle. Préférer → je préfère. Nettoyer → je nettoie.

Example nous mangeons · nous commençons · j’achète · je nettoie
