Rule and examples

Il, elle, ils, elles

To replace a noun: il (a boy, an animal or a masculine thing), elle (a girl or a feminine thing), ils (several, with at least one masculine), elles (several, all feminine). Léa et Paul → ils. Léa et Zoé → elles.

Example Léa chante → elle chante · Léa et Paul chantent → ils chantent

Je, tu, nous, vous

Just me: je. Just you: tu. Me and someone else: nous. You and other people, or one person you say “vous” to out of politeness: vous.

Example Toi et moi → nous · Toi et Paul → vous

On, and tu / vous

“On” often replaces “nous” in speech, but the verb is singular: on mange (not on mangeons). We say “tu” to a friend or a child, and “vous” to an adult we do not know, to be polite.

Example Nous mangeons → on mange · Tu es mon ami · Vous êtes la directrice
