Verbs

Être and avoir (to be and to have)

Être et avoir

Être: je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont. Avoir: j’ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont.

Rule and examples

Être: who we are, where we are

Être is used to say who we are, where we are or what we are like: je suis en retard, elle est grande, nous sommes à l’école. Je suis · tu es · il est · nous sommes · vous êtes · ils sont.

Example Je suis en retard. · Elle est grande. · Nous sommes à l’école.

Avoir: what we have

Avoir is used to say what we own: j’ai un chien. J’ai · tu as · il a · nous avons · vous avez · ils ont. Careful: ils ont (avoir) ≠ ils sont (être).

Example J’ai un chien. · Ils ont un chien. · Ils sont contents.

Avoir faim, avoir chaud, avoir dix ans

For hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fear, sleepiness, pain and age, French says avoir (not être): j’ai faim, tu as soif, il a chaud, elle a dix ans. We never say “je suis faim”.

Example J’ai faim. · Tu as soif. · Elle a dix ans.
