Rule and examples

The question word

Dove? asks about place. Quando? time. Chi? a person. Che cosa? (or cosa?) a thing. Come? manner. Perché? reason. To answer “perché” we also say “perché”: Perché piangi? Perché ho paura. In questions the word order is the same as in a normal sentence: Dove abiti? No auxiliary verb is used as in English.

Example Dove abiti? · Quando arriva? · Chi è? · Che cosa mangi? · Come stai? · Perché piangi?

Quanto and quale: they agree

Quanto (quantity) agrees with the noun: quanto pane? quanta acqua? quanti gatti? quante mele? Quale (which, among several) is quale in the singular and quali in the plural: quale libro? quali libri? Before “è”: qual è il tuo nome? (no apostrophe).

Example Quanti gatti hai? · Quante mele? · Quale libro? · Qual è il tuo nome?

Dov’è, com’è, cos’è and the prepositions

Before “è” we usually use the apostrophe: dov’è, com’è, cos’è (che cos’è?). Not in the plural: dove sono, come sono. The preposition goes before the question word: Con chi giochi? A chi scrivi? Da dove vieni? Di che cosa parli? (not “Chi giochi con?”).

Example Dov’è il gatto? · Dove sono i gatti? · Con chi giochi?
