Sentences

Negation: non, non … mai, non … niente

La negazione: non, non … mai, non … niente

“Non” goes before the verb: non mangio. In the passato prossimo before ho/sono: non ho mangiato. With mai, niente, nessuno, più we also say “non”: non vedo niente.

Rule and examples

Non before the verb

To say no we put “non” before the verb: Luca non mangia la mela. Not “no” (which is only used to answer) and not after the verb. With a pronoun, “non” goes before the pronoun: Non lo vedo.

Example Luca non mangia la mela. · Non lo vedo.

In the passato prossimo

In compound tenses “non” goes before the auxiliary (ho, hai, ha, sono, è…) and the participle stays after: Non ho mangiato la torta. Non è arrivato. It never goes between the auxiliary and the participle.

Example Non ho mangiato. · Non è arrivato. · Non l’ho visto.

Mai, niente, nessuno, più

After the verb we also say “non”: Non mangio mai pesce. Non vedo niente. Non conosco nessuno. Non abito più qui. If the negative word comes before the verb, we do not use “non”: Nessuno parla. Niente è facile.

Example Non mangio mai pesce. · Non vedo niente. · Nessuno parla.
