C’è / ce, l’ho / lo, l’ha / la / là / lì / li
C’è = ci è (there is); ce = ci before l’, la, ne (ce l’ho). L’ho = lo + ho; lo = pronoun. L’ha = lo ha; la = article; là, lì = place (with an accent); li = pronoun.
Rule and examples
C’è or ce?
“C’è” is “ci è” and means “there is”: Qui c’è un gatto. Non c’è nessuno. It is written with an apostrophe and an accent. “Ce” is “ci” before l’, la, li, le, ne: Ce l’ho io. Ce la faccio. Ce ne sono due. If l’ or ne comes next, we write “ce”.
Example Qui c’è un gatto. · Ce l’ho io. · Ce ne sono due.
L’ho or lo?
“L’ho” is “lo + ho”: Il pacco? L’ho preso io. It has the h of “ho” and the apostrophe. “Lo” is the pronoun (or article) before a verb or a noun, with no h: Gus lo vede. Lo zaino.
Example L’ho visto. · Gus lo vede.
L’ha, la, là, lì, li
“L’ha” is “lo ha” / “la ha”: Gus l’ha portato. “La” with no accent is the article or the pronoun: la mamma; la vedo. “Là” and “lì” with an accent show a place: Il drago abita là. Il pacco è lì. “Li” with no accent is the pronoun (masculine plural): I pacchi? Gus li porta.
