Spelling and accents
Accents: città, perché, più, sì / si
Gli accenti: città, perché, più, sì / si
The accent is written on the last vowel if it is stressed: città, caffè, perché (acute), più, può, già. Some short words have an accent to tell them apart: sì / si, dà / da, tè / te, né / ne.
Rule and examples
Accent on the last vowel
If the word is stressed on the last vowel, we write the accent: città, caffè, università, lunedì, bontà, virtù. In Italian the accent is almost always grave (à, è, ì, ò, ù): we do not write “cittá” or “citta’”. The acute accent (é) is used mainly in perché, poiché, benché, né, sé.
Example città · caffè · lunedì · bontà · perché
Perché, più, può, già
One-syllable words with two vowels also have an accent: più, può, già, giù, ciò. Perché is written with an acute accent (é), not “perchè”. We never write an apostrophe instead of the accent: “perche’”, “piu’” are mistakes.
Example perché · più · può · già · ciò
Sì / si, dà / da, tè / te, né / ne, sé / se
Some one-syllable words have an accent so they are not confused with identical ones: sì (answer) / si (pronoun); dà (verb dare) / da (preposition); tè (drink) / te (pronoun); né (= nor) / ne (pronoun); sé (oneself) / se (if). They have the accent: sì, dà, tè, né, sé, là, lì.
Example Sì, grazie. · Si lava. · Gus dà il pacco. · Vengo da Roma. · un tè · a te
