Sentences

Direct object pronouns: lo, la, li, le, mi, ti

Pronomi diretti: lo, la, li, le, mi, ti

Lo (m.), la (f.), li (m. pl.), le (f. pl.) replace the object: Vedo Luca → Lo vedo. They go before the verb; with the infinitive they are attached: vederlo. Mi, ti, ci, vi.

Rule and examples

Lo, la, li, le

To avoid repeating the noun we use the pronoun: lo (masculine singular), la (feminine singular), li (masculine plural), le (feminine plural). Vedo Luca → Lo vedo. Mangio la torta → La mangio. Compro i biscotti → Li compro. Prendo le chiavi → Le prendo. The pronoun goes before the verb, not after.

Example Lo vedo. · La mangio. · Li compro. · Le prendo.

Mi, ti, ci, vi

For io, tu, noi, voi we use mi, ti, ci, vi, always before the verb: Luca chiama me → Luca mi chiama. Sara saluta te → Sara ti saluta. Gus aiuta noi → Gus ci aiuta. La maestra chiama voi → La maestra vi chiama.

Example Luca mi chiama. · Sara ti saluta. · Gus ci aiuta.

In the passato prossimo and with the infinitive

In the passato prossimo the pronoun goes before avere; lo and la become l’ before ho, hai, ha: L’ho visto. L’ho mangiata. Li ho comprati. Le ho prese. The participle agrees with the pronoun. With the infinitive the pronoun is attached at the end, without the -e: voglio vederla, devo chiamarlo, posso mangiarli.

Example L’ho visto. · L’ho mangiata. · voglio vederla · devo chiamarlo
