Sentences

Indirect object pronouns: gli, le, mi piace

Pronomi indiretti: gli, le, mi piace

To him → gli, to her → le, to them → gli; to me → mi, to you → ti, to us → ci, to you (pl.) → vi. With piacere: mi piace il gelato, mi piacciono le mele.

Rule and examples

Gli and le: to him, to her

When the object has the preposition “a” (telefonare a, scrivere a, rispondere a, dare a, dire a), the pronoun is gli for a boy and le for a girl: Telefono a Luca → Gli telefono. Scrivo a Sara → Le scrivo. We do not use lo / la: that would be a different object.

Example Gli telefono. · Le scrivo. · Gli do il pacco.

Mi piace, ti piacciono

With piacere the person is the object (a me → mi) and the verb agrees with the thing that is liked: Mi piace il gelato (singular). Mi piacciono le mele (plural). Ti piace, gli piace, le piace, ci piace, vi piace. We do not say “io piace”.

Example Mi piace il gelato. · Ti piacciono le mele. · Gli piace il drago.

Direct or indirect?

We check whether the verb takes the preposition “a”. Chiamare, salutare, cercare, ringraziare, guardare, vedere do not take “a”: Chiamo Luca → Lo chiamo. Telefonare, scrivere, rispondere, obbedire, dire, dare take “a”: Rispondo a Gus → Gli rispondo. For plurals, with “a” we use gli: Scrivo ai nonni → Gli scrivo (in very formal writing: Scrivo loro).

Example Lo chiamo. · Gli rispondo. · La saluto. · Le scrivo.
