Sentences

Rule and examples

Che: it never changes

“Che” links two sentences and replaces a person or thing that is the subject or the direct object: Il ragazzo che canta è Luca (= the boy sings). It never changes, neither for gender nor for number.

Cui: after a preposition

When the sentence has a preposition (di, a, da, in, con, per, su), we use “cui” after the preposition: Il libro di cui parlo è nuovo. La ragazza a cui scrivo è Mia. L’amico con cui gioco è Gus. La città in cui abito è piccola. We do not say “il libro di che parlo”.

Look at the verb

To choose, we rebuild the simple sentence: Il gatto ___ vedo → vedo il gatto (no preposition) → che.
