Ci and ne

Ci e ne

Ci = there, to it (Vado a scuola → Ci vado). Ne = of it, of them and the quantity (Ho tre fratelli → Ne ho tre). They go before the verb.

Rule and examples

Ci: there, to it

Ci replaces a place or an object with “a” or “in”: Vado a scuola → Ci vado. Abito a Milano → Ci abito. Gus va in montagna → Gus ci va. Penso al pacco → Ci penso. Credo ai draghi → Ci credo. It goes before the verb.

Ne: of it, the quantity

Ne replaces “di + thing” and a part of a quantity. With a number or a quantity the quantity is repeated: Ho tre fratelli → Ne ho tre. Voglio due panini → Ne voglio due. Bevo molta acqua → Ne bevo molta. With an object with “di”: Parlo di calcio → Ne parlo. Ho paura dei ragni → Ne ho paura. It goes before the verb.

Ci or ne? And in the past

We look at the preposition: “a”, “in”, “da + person” → ci; “di” or a quantity → ne. Credo ai draghi → Ci credo; Parlo del pacco → Ne parlo. In the passato prossimo they stay before the auxiliary: Sono stato a Roma → Ci sono stato. Ho mangiato un panino → Ne ho mangiato uno.
