I verbi riflessivi: mi lavo, ti alzi…

Rule and examples
The reflexive pronoun
In reflexive verbs the action returns to the person doing it. Before the verb we put mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si: io mi lavo · tu ti lavi · lui/lei si lava · noi ci laviamo · voi vi lavate · loro si lavano. To say your name we use the reflexive: “mi chiamo Luca” (not “io chiamo Luca”, which means something else).
Example Mi lavo. · Ti alzi presto. · Si veste. · Ci divertiamo.
The verb follows the person
The pronoun and the verb agree with the person: io mi alzo, tu ti alzi, lui si alza. Without the pronoun the sentence is wrong (“io alzo presto”); if we change the pronoun, the meaning changes (“io ti alzo”: I lift you).
Example Io mi alzo. · Tu ti alzi. · Lei si alza.
With the infinitive the pronoun is attached
The infinitive loses its final -e and takes the pronoun: lavarsi, alzarsi, vestirsi. After potere, volere, dovere the pronoun is the subject’s: devo alzarmi, devi alzarti, deve alzarsi, dobbiamo alzarci, dovete alzarvi, devono alzarsi. It can also go before the verb: mi devo alzare.
Example lavarsi · devo alzarmi · vogliamo divertirci
