Spelling and look-alikes
Tilde and accents: pão, você, ideia
Til e acentos: pão, você, ideia
The tilde (ã, õ) marks the nasal sound: pão, mãe. Acute and circumflex mark the stressed syllable: você, avó, avô. Ideia, voo, veem: no accent (spelling agreement).
Rule and examples
The tilde: ã and õ
The tilde marks the nasal sound and sits over the vowel: pão, mãe, irmã, irmão, coração, maçã, manhã, limão, aviões. Without a tilde the word is different: pao does not exist and maca is something else. In Spanish it is “pan, madre, corazón, mañana”.
Example pão · mãe · irmã · coração · manhã
Acute and circumflex
Accents mark the stressed syllable: você, está, café, também, lápis, médico, música, história, português, sábado. The acute accent (á, é, ó) shows an open vowel; the circumflex (â, ê, ô), a closed vowel: avó (grandmother) ≠ avô (grandfather); pé, bebê, ônibus. Without an accent, “esta” (demonstrative) is not “está” (verb estar).
Example você · está · avó · avô · ônibus · português
The spelling agreement: no accent
Since the Orthographic Agreement (in force in Brazil), we write without the old accent: ideia, plateia, estreia, assembleia, jiboia, heroico; voo, enjoo; veem, leem; para (verb parar), pelo (hair). And without the diaeresis: linguiça, frequência, tranquilo. Note: the accents of herói, papéis and pôde remain.
Example ideia · voo · veem · linguiça · para · pelo
