Spelling and look-alikes

Spelling: s, ss, ç, z · x, ch · g, j · nh, lh

Grafia: s, ss, ç, z · x, ch · g, j · nh, lh

Casa (s=z), passa (ss=s), caça (ç), cidade (c), peixe and chave (x, ch), girafa and janela (g, j), banho and filho (nh, lh).

Rule and examples

S, ss, z, ç, c

Between two vowels, “s” sounds like z (casa, mesa, rosa) and “ss” sounds like s (passa, massa, osso). The z appears in azul, fazer, feliz and in words in -eza (beleza). The “ç” is only used before a, o, u (caça, braço, açúcar, cabeça, coração); before e, i we write “c” (cidade, cinco, doce, receber). In Spanish it is “cabeza, azúcar, corazón”: in Portuguese it is cabeça, açúcar, coração.

Example casa · passa · azul · caça · cidade

X or ch?

The “sh” sound is written with ch (chave, chuva, chinelo) or with x (peixe, caixa, bruxa, xícara, abacaxi, mexo). There is no simple rule: learn it with the word. Careful: the Spanish “ch” (mucho) has a different sound, and so has the Spanish x (examen).

Example chave · chuva · peixe · caixa · bruxa · xícara

G, j, nh, lh

Before e, i, “g” sounds like j (girafa, gente, viagem); before a, o, u we write j (janela, jogo, jantar). The sound of the Spanish “ñ” is written nh (banho, ninho); the sound of the Spanish “ll” (as in “caballo”) is written lh (filho, olho, trabalhar, cavalo). Portuguese has no “ñ” or “ll”.

Example girafa · janela · banho · filho · olho
