The adjective: gender and number

O adjetivo: gênero e número

The adjective agrees with the noun: bonito, bonita, bonitos, bonitas. Grande, feliz and azul do not change in the feminine.

Rule and examples

The adjective agrees

The adjective takes the gender and the number of the noun. In -o, the feminine changes -o to -a: bonito → bonita. The plural adds -s: bonitos, bonitas. Adjectives in -e do not change in the feminine: grande, forte, verde. Neither do adjectives in -z and -l: feliz, azul, fácil. Plural: felizes, azuis, fáceis. Adjectives in -or (trabalhador) make the feminine in -ora.

Example um gato preto · uma casa bonita · gatos pretos · casas bonitas

Special feminines

Some adjectives change more: português → portuguesa, japonês → japonesa (no accent in the feminine), alemão → alemã (plural alemães), brincalhão → brincalhona (plural brincalhões), trabalhador → trabalhadora, bom → boa, mau → má. To say “thank you”, the speaker chooses: a boy says “obrigado” and a girl says “obrigada”.

Example uma menina portuguesa · uma mãe trabalhadora · Muito obrigada!

“Muito” does not change · two subjects

Before an adjective, “muito” is an adverb and does not change: as meninas estão muito cansadas. If there is a boy and a girl, the adjective goes in the masculine plural: Léo e Bia estão cansados.

Example As meninas estão muito cansadas. · Léo e Bia estão cansados.
