Words
Meu, seu, nosso, dele…
Meu, minha · seu, sua (you) · nosso, nossa · dele, dela, deles, delas. The possessive agrees with the thing; dele/dela tell who the owner is.
Rule and examples
Meu, seu, nosso
The possessive agrees with the thing owned, not with the owner: meu gato, minha casa, meus gatos, minhas casas. I: meu, minha, meus, minhas. You: seu, sua, seus, suas. We: nosso, nossa, nossos, nossas. In Spanish “mi” and “su” do not change with gender (mi gato, mi casa); in Portuguese they do: meu gato, minha casa.
Example meu gato · minha casa · meus livros · minhas bolas · nossa padaria
Dele, dela, deles, delas
To talk about another person, the normal way is to say whose it is: o gato dele (a boy’s), a bola dela (a girl’s), a casa deles, a casa delas. Here the word agrees with the owner: dele ≠ dela. In Brazilian Portuguese, “seu/sua” talks about “você”. For several owners who are listening: a casa de vocês. Careful: never “de ele” or “de ela”; it is “dele” and “dela”.
Example o gato dele · a bola dela · a casa deles · a casa de vocês
