Estar + gerúndio: estou falando

What is happening right now: estou falando, ela está comendo, nós estamos abrindo. -ar: -ando · -er: -endo · -ir: -indo.

Rule and examples

Estar + gerúndio

To talk about what is happening right now, we use estar (estou, está, estamos, estão) + the gerund. In Brazil the gerund comes right after estar, with no preposition: Eu estou falando com Gus. Ela está dançando. Nós estamos esperando o trem.

Example Eu estou falando. · Ela está dançando. · Nós estamos esperando.

-ando, -endo, -indo

We remove the -r of the infinitive and add -ndo: falar → falando, comer → comendo, abrir → abrindo. In Spanish it is “comiendo, abriendo”; in Portuguese it is “comendo, abrindo”. Careful: the gerund never changes (never “falandos”).

Example falar → falando · comer → comendo · abrir → abrindo

Short verbs and pôr

The rule also works for short verbs: ser → sendo, ter → tendo, ver → vendo, ler → lendo, ir → indo, vir → vindo, dizer → dizendo, fazer → fazendo, trazer → trazendo, sair → saindo, ouvir → ouvindo. The only exception is pôr → pondo. None of them has “-iendo” or “-yendo” as in Spanish.

Example pôr → pondo · vir → vindo · ver → vendo · sair → saindo
