Rule and examples
The most common prepositions
Em: place and time (moro em São Paulo, nasci em janeiro). De: origin and possession (sou de Curitiba, o pacote é de Gus). A: destination and manner (vou a pé). Com: company and instrument (brinco com meu cachorro, escrevo com lápis). Sem: absence (café sem açúcar; in Spanish it is “sin”). Até: limit (fico aqui até as cinco; in Spanish it is “hasta”).

Verb + preposition
Many verbs always take the same preposition: gostar de, precisar de, depender de, cuidar de · pensar em, acreditar em, confiar em · sonhar com, conversar com, brincar com · olhar para · aprender a, começar a, ajudar a · terminar de, parar de. Learn it with the verb.

Time and transport
Means of transport: vou de ônibus, de bicicleta, de carro, de trem; but vou a pé. Time: às oito horas, em janeiro, de manhã, desde 2020, até sexta. In Portuguese we do not say “vou em ônibus”.
