Adjectives: gender and number

Gli aggettivi: genere e numero

The adjective agrees with the noun: nero, nera, neri, nere. Those in -e have two forms: grande, grandi. Watch -co/-go and blu, rosa, viola.

Rule and examples

Four forms: -o, -a, -i, -e

Adjectives in -o have four forms, like nouns: masculine singular -o (nero), feminine singular -a (nera), masculine plural -i (neri), feminine plural -e (nere). The adjective always has the gender and number of the noun: il gatto nero, la casa nera, i gatti neri, le case nere.

Example il gatto nero · la casa nera · i gatti neri · le case nere

Adjectives in -e

Adjectives in -e have only two forms: -e in the singular (masculine and feminine) and -i in the plural (masculine and feminine): il drago grande, la casa grande, i draghi grandi, le case grandi. Verde, felice, triste, gentile, forte and veloce work like this.

Example il drago grande · la casa grande · i draghi grandi · le case grandi

-co, -go and the colours that never change

Adjectives in -co and -go add an h before -i and -e: bianco → bianchi, bianche; lungo → lunghi, lunghe. Those in -ico often make -ici in the masculine plural: simpatico → simpatici, but simpatiche. Blu, rosa and viola never change: due zaini blu, le scarpe rosa.

Example bianchi · lunghe · simpatici · due zaini blu
