Possessives: il mio, la tua, i suoi…

I possessivi: il mio, la tua, i suoi…

Usually with the article: il mio libro, la tua casa. No article with family members in the singular: mia madre, tuo padre. Loro never changes.

Rule and examples

With the article, as in “il mio libro”

In Italian the possessive usually has the article: il mio libro, la tua casa, i suoi gatti, le nostre scarpe. The possessive agrees with the thing owned, not with the owner: mio/mia/miei/mie, tuo/tua/tuoi/tue, suo/sua/suoi/sue, nostro/nostra/nostri/nostre, vostro/vostra/vostri/vostre. Loro never changes: il loro gatto, la loro casa, i loro gatti.

Example il mio libro · la tua casa · i suoi gatti · le nostre scarpe · il loro gatto

Family members: no article

With family words in the singular we do not use the article: mia madre, tuo padre, sua sorella, nostro fratello. In the plural the article comes back: i miei fratelli, le tue sorelle, i nostri genitori. With mamma, papà, babbo, nonno and nonna the article is used: la mia mamma, il mio papà, la mia nonna. In some regions (Tuscany, the north) you also hear “la mia sorella”: standard Italian says “mia sorella”.

Example mia madre · tuo padre · sua sorella · i miei fratelli

Exceptions: loro, diminutives, after the noun

With loro the article stays even for family members: la loro sorella, il loro padre. It also stays with diminutives: il mio fratellino, la tua sorellina. After the noun (and in some expressions) there is no article: a casa mia, a casa tua; mamma mia!; amico mio. With un/una we say: un mio amico, una tua amica.

Example la loro sorella · il mio fratellino · a casa mia · un mio amico
