Plural nouns

Il plurale dei nomi

-o → -i, -a → -e, -e → -i. Watch -co/-go (-chi, -ghi), -ca/-ga (-che, -ghe), -cia/-gia (-ce, -ge). Some nouns do not change.

Rule and examples

-o → -i, -a → -e, -e → -i

The plural changes the final vowel: -o becomes -i (gatto → gatti), -a becomes -e (casa → case), -e becomes -i (cane → cani). In Italian we do not add -s.

Example un gatto → due gatti · una casa → due case · un cane → due cani

The sound stays the same: -chi, -ghe, -ce

To keep the hard sound we add an h: pacco → pacchi, drago → draghi, amica → amiche, strega → streghe. With -cia and -gia (after a consonant) the i drops: arancia → arance, spiaggia → spiagge. With unstressed -io there is a single i: negozio → negozi, bacio → baci.

Example pacchi · draghi · amiche · streghe · spiagge

Nouns that do not change and irregular plurals

These do not change: nouns with an accent on the last vowel (città, caffè, università), shortened nouns (auto, foto, moto, bici) and many foreign words (film, sport, bar). Common irregulars: uomo → uomini, mano → mani, uovo → uova (feminine!), amico → amici.

Example una città → due città · un film → due film · un uomo → due uomini
