The conditional: vorrei, potresti…

Il condizionale: vorrei, potresti…

To ask politely: vorrei, potrei, mi piacerebbe, potresti, potrebbe. Future stem + -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero.

Rule and examples

Asking politely

“Voglio un gelato” is too direct. With the conditional we are politer: “Vorrei un gelato, per favore”. Also “Potrei aprire la finestra?” and “Mi piacerebbe giocare con te” are politer than “Posso…?” and “Mi piace…”.

Example Vorrei un gelato. · Potrei entrare? · Mi piacerebbe giocare.

The forms: future stem + -ei…

We start from the future stem (parler-, vorr-, potr-, avr-) and add -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero: vorrei · vorresti · vorrebbe · vorremmo · vorreste · vorrebbero. Potere: potrei, potresti, potrebbe, potremmo. With tu: potresti; with Lei: potrebbe.

Example vorrei · potresti · potrebbe · vorremmo · avrebbe

The conditional is not the future

Do not mix them up: parlerò (future, tomorrow) and parlerei (conditional, politeness or “if…”). The conditional also expresses a wish that depends on a condition: Se avessi tempo, andrei al mare.

Example Parlerò domani. · Parlerei volentieri. · Se avessi tempo, andrei al mare.
