Verbs
The imperative (imperativo)
L’imperativo
Tu: parla! (-are → -a), prendi!, dormi!, finisci! Voi and noi as in the present: parlate!, parliamo! Lei: parli! Negative with tu: non parlare!
Rule and examples
Tu: parla! prendi! dormi!
To give an order to a person you call “tu”: verbs in -are make -a (parla!, ascolta!, canta!), those in -ere and -ire make -i (prendi!, apri!, dormi!). Verbs with -isc- make -isci (finisci!). Careful: “ascolta!” is the imperative, “ascolti” is the present.
Example Parla! · Ascolta! · Prendi! · Apri! · Finisci!
Voi, noi and Lei
Voi and noi have the same form as the present: parlate!, prendete!, aprite!; parliamo!, prendiamo!, apriamo! (noi: “let’s do something together”). Lei (polite) changes the vowel: -are → -i (parli!), -ere and -ire → -a (prenda!, apra!, finisca!).
Example Parlate! · Parliamo! · Parli! · Prenda! · Finisca!
The negative and irregular verbs
With “tu” the negative is non + infinitive: non toccare!, non correre!. With voi, noi and Lei it stays the same: non toccate!, non tocchi!. Irregular with tu: vieni! (venire), esci! (uscire), di’! (dire, with an apostrophe), sii! (essere), abbi! (avere).
Example Non toccare! · Non toccate! · Vieni! · Esci! · Di’! · Sii gentile!
