Questo, quello and bello

Questo, quello e bello

Questo (near): questo, questa, questi, queste. Quello (far) follows the article: il → quel, lo → quello, l’ → quell’, i → quei, gli → quegli. Bello does the same.

Questo: near me

Questo points to something near and has four forms, like an adjective in -o: questo gatto, questa casa, questi libri, queste mele. It agrees with the noun.

Quello: far from me

Quello points to something far away. Before a noun it follows the form of the definite article: il gatto → quel gatto; la casa → quella casa; i libri → quei libri; le mele → quelle mele. Without a noun it is regular: quello, quella, quelli, quelle.

Lo, gli, l’ and bello

With lo, gli and l’ we get quello, quegli, quell’: quello zaino, quegli gnomi, quell’albero. Bello (before a noun) does the same: bel castello, bello zaino, bell’orologio, bella torta, bei draghi, begli occhi, belle stelle.
