Rule and examples

Io, tu, lui, lei, noi, voi, loro

Io = just me. Tu = just you. Lui = a boy. Lei = a girl. Noi = me and others. Voi = you and others. Loro = several people, boys, girls or mixed. Luca → lui; Sara → lei; Luca e Sara → loro; io e Luca → noi; tu e Luca → voi.

Example Luca → lui · Sara → lei · Luca e Sara → loro · io e Luca → noi

Tu, voi or Lei?

To a friend, a relative or a child we say “tu”. To several people we say “voi”. To an adult we do not know, or to someone we respect (the doctor, the headteacher), we say “Lei”, with the verb in the third person singular: “Lei abita qui?”.

Example Tu abiti qui? · Voi abitate qui? · Lei abita qui?

The pronoun is often left out

In Italian the verb ending already shows who is speaking, so the subject pronoun is usually left out: “Parlo italiano” sounds more natural than “Io parlo italiano”. It is used for emphasis or contrast: “Io mangio, tu dormi”.

Example Parlo italiano. · Mangi una mela? · Io mangio, tu dormi.
