Verbs

The simple future (futuro semplice)

Il futuro semplice

Infinitive + -ò, -ai, -à, -emo, -ete, -anno: parlerò, venderò, dormirò (-are becomes -er-). Irregular: sarò, avrò, andrò, farò, verrò, potrò…

Rule and examples

The endings

We remove the final -e of the infinitive and add -ò, -ai, -à, -emo, -ete, -anno. Careful: verbs in -are change the a to e: parlare → parlerò (not “parlarò”). The others do not: vendere → venderò, dormire → dormirò. Io parlerò · tu parlerai · lui parlerà · noi parleremo · voi parlerete · loro parleranno.

Example parlerò · venderai · dormirà · canteremo · aspetterete · finiranno

Spelling changes and first irregulars

-care and -gare keep the h: giocare → giocherò, pagare → pagherò. -ciare and -giare lose the i: mangiare → mangerò, cominciare → comincerò (but studiare → studierò). Easy irregulars: essere → sarò, avere → avrò, andare → andrò, fare → farò, dare → darò, stare → starò.

Example giocherò · mangerò · sarò · avrò · andrò · farò

Irregular stems with -rr-

Some verbs lose the vowel before the r: potere → potrò, dovere → dovrò, vedere → vedrò, sapere → saprò, vivere → vivrò, cadere → cadrò. Others double the r: venire → verrò, volere → vorrò, bere → berrò, rimanere → rimarrò. The endings are the usual ones.

Example potrò · vedrai · saprà · verrò · vorremo · berranno
