Words
Indefinite articles: un, uno, una, un’
Articoli indeterminativi: un, uno, una, un’
Un (masculine), una (feminine). Uno before s + consonant, z, gn, ps. Un’ only for the feminine before a vowel.
Rule and examples
Un and una
Un is used with masculine nouns (un gatto, un amico), una with feminine nouns before a consonant (una casa, una mela). There is no plural: to say “some” we use another word (dei, alcuni).
Example un gatto · un amico · una casa · una mela
Uno
Before a masculine noun that starts with s + consonant, z, gn, ps or x we use uno: uno zaino, uno studente, uno gnomo, uno specchio. It is the same rule as lo.
Example uno zaino · uno studente · uno gnomo
Un’ only for the feminine
Before a vowel the feminine becomes un’: un’amica, un’isola, un’idea (“una amica” is also found, but un’amica is the normal form). The masculine never has an apostrophe: un amico, un albero, un uomo (not “un’amico”).
Example un’amica · un’isola · un amico · un albero
