Por que, porque, por quê, porquê

Por que (apart): question. Porque (together): answer. Por quê (with an accent): at the end of the sentence. Porquê: the reason (noun).

Por que and porque

Por que (apart) opens a question, and also an indirect question: Por que você chorou? Não sei por que ele chorou. Porque (together) answers and explains: Eu chorei porque perdi o pacote. In Spanish: ¿por qué? / porque; in Portuguese, the question word takes no accent in the middle of a sentence.

Example Por que você chorou? · Eu chorei porque perdi o pacote.

Por quê and porquê

Por quê (apart, with an accent) appears at the end of a sentence or alone: Você chorou por quê? Ele não veio. Por quê? Porquê (together, with an accent) is a noun, the “reason”, and takes an article: Não sei o porquê da tempestade. Tudo tem um porquê.

Onde or aonde?

For a fixed place, we use onde: Onde você mora? Onde fica a padaria? Aonde is only used with verbs of movement: Aonde você vai? (In speech many people say “Onde você vai?”, but the standard norm asks for “aonde”.) In Spanish it is “dónde / adónde”; in Portuguese, “onde / aonde”, but never “donde”.
