Rule and examples
Você: fale, coma, abra
The grammar imperative drops the -o of the “eu” form and changes the vowel: -ar → -e (eu falo → fale), -er/-ir → -a (eu como → coma, eu abro → abra). It is the form taught at school, found on signs and in instructions, and used to address an older person respectfully (o senhor, a senhora, a professora). Among friends, many people use the “tu” form with “você”: “Fala!”, “Abre!”, “Vem!”. Here we study the grammar form.
Example Fale devagar! · Coma o pão! · Abra a janela!
Vocês: falem, comam, abram · não
For several people, we add -m: falem, comam, abram. In the negative the form is the same, with “não” before it: Não falem! Não comam! Não abram! Not “não fala” when ordering respectfully.
Example Falem baixo! · Comam o pão! · Não abram a porta!
Irregulars and spelling
Irregulars follow the “eu” form: fazer → faça (faço), dizer → diga (digo), vir → venha (venho), trazer → traga (trago), ter → tenha (tenho), ver → veja (vejo), pôr → ponha (ponho), sair → saia (saio). Special ones: ir → vá, ser → seja, estar → esteja, dar → dê, saber → saiba. To keep the sound: tocar → toque, pagar → pague, começar → comece. In Spanish it is “haga, venga, traiga, vaya, sea”: do not copy.
Example Faça a lição! · Venha aqui! · Seja gentil! · Toque piano!
