Sentences

Negation: não, nada, ninguém, nunca

A negação: não, nada, ninguém, nunca

Não goes before the verb: eu não falo. When nada, ninguém or nunca come after the verb, they also need não: não vejo nada.

Rule and examples

Não before the verb

To negate, we put “não” before the verb: Eu não falo português. Léo não come pão. In Spanish it is “no”; in Portuguese it is “não”, with a tilde. In short answers: “Você gosta de chuva?” “Não, não gosto.”

Example Eu não falo. · Léo não come pão. · Não, não gosto.

Nada, ninguém, nunca

If the negative word comes after the verb, we also use “não” before the verb: Não vejo nada. Não conheço ninguém. If it comes before the verb, we do not use “não”: Ninguém chegou. Nada funciona. Eu nunca como carne. Never “Ninguém não chegou”.

Example Não vejo nada. · Ninguém chegou. · Eu nunca como carne.

Nenhum, nenhuma, ainda não

Nenhum and nenhuma agree with the noun: Não tenho nenhum gato. Não tenho nenhuma bola. (In Spanish: ninguno, ninguna.) “Ainda não” means “not yet”: Eu ainda não comi. Before the verb the order is “ainda não”, never “não ainda”. (After the verb you can also say: Eu não comi ainda.)

Example Não tenho nenhuma bola. · Eu ainda não comi.
